Dundee vs Dundee United: Tony Docherty and Jim Goodwin look ahead to Scottish Premiership derby at Dens Park | Football News
Dundee host Dundee United in their second derby clash of the season when they face off at Dens Park on Thursday – live on Sky Sports.
Tony Docherty’s side finished 2024 on a high by ending their run of three successive Premiership defeats 2-1 at St Mirren.
Jim Goodwin’s men also enjoyed an important victory as Kevin Holt scored in the 94th minute to beat Aberdeen 1-0 and move within three points of third place. That left United with 31 points – the same total they had when they were relegated in 2023 – only this time with half a season remaining.
This will be the first time these clubs have met at Dens Park in nearly three years – both seasons spanning Scotland’s second division. Dundee United just last season and Dundee the year before.
However, they met at Tannadice in August to play out a pulsating 2-2 draw. If the next installment of this storied rivalry is anything to go by, we’re in for some fireworks to kick off the New Year.
Docherty ready for an “electric” derby atmosphere
Dundee boss Tony Docherty he said Sky Sports News:
“It’s a fantastic game. It’s great for the city. I live here and I feel the pulse of the place, everyone gets excited about the derby.
“The players are buzzing, especially after a very strong performance and the result away at St Mirren.
“I like that we are at home. In my time here, the crowds have been fantastic and our great success has been based on our home form. People play a huge role in this.
“Whatever team comes to Dens Park, I don’t want them to just play with the team, I want them to play with the people in the stands and I want us to build that atmosphere.
“It will be electric, absolutely electric. Just like the last one. It has everything, it has the tradition and the history. Dundee United will walk up to Tannadice Road like we did last time.
“It’s a good opportunity and I want it to be a good advertisement for Scottish football for both clubs.”
Goodwin: Bragging rights at stake
Dundee United boss Jim Goodwin he said Sky Sports News:
“It goes without saying, we’re all really excited and looking forward to the game.
“The first game we played at Tannadice was a terrific spectacle with two very good teams playing in it and a brilliant atmosphere.
“We’re expecting a similar game on Thursday. It means a lot to both sets of fans and we’re happy to go into the game in really good form.
“We are expecting a hostile atmosphere from the home support but we will have huge support there to get behind the team.
“The game means a lot to the city. Bragging rights are at stake so we can give a good account of ourselves and the fans can have those bragging rights after the game.”
Watch the Dundee derby live on Sky Sports Football and Main Event from 5.15pm on Thursday 2 January, kick-off 5.30pm, following Rangers v Celtic (3pm kick-off).
