Mobile & Gadgets:

How Apple will ‘fix’ the problem of incorrect AI notification summaries

Apple Intelligence provided beta started a few months ago iPhone 16 and 15 Pro users with system-level AI tools. One of the controversial advantages included in this AI suite is the notification summary that works in Apple and third-party apps. When enabled, the system scans long alerts and notification stacks and provides one-line summaries that capture their essence. As expected, this feature doesn’t always provide accurate results, so Apple will address users’ concerns through a future software update.

last month, BBC Apple published an article highlighting how fake AI notification summaries can affect the credibility of a point of sale. On several occasions, the iOS BBC app generated inaccurate headlines based on push notifications. Apple has now responded and provided for these complaints Ars Technica with the following statement:

Apple Intelligence is designed to help users perform everyday tasks faster and easier. This includes optional notification summaries, which allow users who choose to opt-in to view information from apps at a glance and tap into full details when they want. These are identified by a summary icon, and the original content is a quick tap away. Apple Intelligence features are in beta, and we’re constantly making improvements with the help of user feedback. An app update in the coming weeks will make it even clearer that the text displayed is a summary provided by Apple Intelligence. We encourage users to report a concern if they see an unexpected notification summary.

Currently, when Apple provides a notification summary, it marks it with a subtle icon. A future iOS version will likely make the icon more prominent, according to the company’s statement. Or maybe it will show a warning saying that the content is generated by AI. It’s unclear exactly when this update will arrive, but it could be bundled with iOS 18.3, as that version is also expected to roll out in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, if you’re unhappy with Apple Intelligence’s notification summary tool, you can disable it in the Settings app. The system allows you to turn it off completely or for individual programs. So, for example, you can leave it open messaging services but reject news programs.
