Mierau / Hotline: A modern hotline client for Mac, iOS, and iPados

An attempt to resurrect the hotline for modern apple systems (iOS, macos, etc.) by fully recreate its speed and swiftui.
Note: This project (up to date) does not include server software. This is a client for connecting and engaging in hotline servers. If you want to host your own hotline server (and you need to!), Please checkout the best Mobius Project: https://github.com/jhalter/mobius

The hotline was released in 1997 for Mac OS. A suite of three (free) applications that allow people to participate in or host online communities directly from their Macs. No subscriptions. No ads.
When connected to a hotline server you could chat with other users like IRC, message others privately like aim, read or write threaded news like a forum, post to the server’s message board like bbs, and browse, upload, or download files like ftp. And as a person who operates a hotline server you control over it.
Hotline also includes trackers. Trackers tracked servers. If you run a hotline server, you can list it with one or more trackers to find people your server – and anyone can run a tracker.
At a time when people chatted with the email and the file sharing is to pass the physical media between friends, the hotline is a form of revelation. The promise of the internet, in a way. Computers belong to individuals, connected and submitted information between each other. There is no central server that can take full offline network.
Maybe that’s why you can find hotline servers and trackers running now 25 years later. Although the company built on the hotline is out of the environment, and the software they make is only available through Retro Mac Software Archives, these communities are still working.
And this project is an attempt to create a modern open source version of the hotline for modern apples systems. Join. Contribution. Run your own server! Maybe the hotline can survive for another 25 years. π
