AUS vs IND: Cricket Australia admits mistake after Sunil Gavaskar steal, awarding BGT Trophy to winning team

The thrill of 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy came to an end as Australia defeated India in the fifth and final Test match to win the series 3–1. With this, Australia’s long wait to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has finally come to an end after 10 years. Amidst celebrations by the home team, a slip-up during the awarding of the trophy has caught the attention of cricket fans and pundits.
Sunil Gavaskar not invited to present BGT 2024-25
In a major development at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), the Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar who shares his name with a former Australian cricketer Allan Border in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, he was not invited on stage to present the trophy to the winning captain Pat Cumminsalong with its Australian counterpart. The 75-year-old former India skipper stood 100 meters away from the presentation venue while Border was called on stage to present the prestigious trophy.
The Indian legend later recalled the incident during a chat with News Corp and remarked that he would love to present the trophy to the winning captain.
“I sure would have loved to have been there for the presentation. After all it is the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and it is about Australia and India. I mean, I’m here on the ground. To me it shouldn’t matter who Australia won when it comes to presentation. They played the best cricket and that’s how they won. It’s fine. I would be happy to share the trophy with my good friend Allan Border. Gavaskar said.

Cricket Australia accepts their mistake
After the news of Gavaskar being snubbed from the trophy presentation became a talking point in the cricketing world, Cricket Australia he came out and admitted a major error on their part.
“We recognize that it would have been preferable if both Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar had been asked to come on stage. a CA spokesperson said in a statement admitting their mistake. However, Cricket Australia also confirmed that Gavaskar was informed that he would have given the trophy to the Indian skipper jasprit bumrah if the visiting team would have won the Sydney Test and retained the trophy.
