On Friday, OpenAI announced It introduces a new user interface for ChatGPT’s custom notification menu, including new ways to customize the chatbot’s features. Now, users can specify a preferred name or nickname, their occupation, what they want ChatGPT to know about them, and “characteristics” they want the chatbot to have. OpenAI suggests traits like “chatty,” “encouraging,” and “Gen Z.”
Important to note that this is unrelated to ChatGPT Memory feature, which allows users to explicitly ask ChatGPT to remember – or forget – something. Somewhat confusingly, ChatGPT “memories” can be personal details — but they can also cover a broader range of conversation-related information.

It’s likely that the new menu is more of an aesthetic makeover than a deep technical upgrade. A feature of old custom instructions Used To guide the style and tone of ChatGPT is called prompt engineering. Essentially, it “primes” the AI powering ChatGPT with a paragraph of user-supplied instructions so that its responses follow those needs and preferences.
As far as we can tell, the new menu still relies on prompt engineering. It presents it in a simple user friendly manner.
OpenAI has previously said it applies moderation to custom notifications to verify whether they comply with its terms of use. Presumably, it hasn’t changed with improved personalization settings.
OpenAI has focused on polishing ChatGPT as its user base grows, adding capabilities such as Live web search and “canvas“An interface designed for writing and coding projects. The company said in December that more than 300 million people use the chatbot every week.
