Consumer sentiments fall between the concerns of tariffs, inflation

Consumer sentiments dropped about 5% in February, fell to the lowest level from July, according to the initial results for the University of Michigan’s February Consumers’ surveys.
This is the second consecutive month where Consumer Trust dropped, after a 4% January slide marking the first decline in reading for six months.
Consumer Director Exams Joanne Hsu The drop is identified as part of consumers’ concerns about the effect of tariffs, according to a Friday (Feb 7) Press release.
HSU said that while all of the index components declined in February, the deterioration “led by durable ways to prevent negative effects of Tariff Policy.”
The survey learned that many consumers are concerned that high inflation returns within a year, according to release.
The forward-expectations of the year from 3.3% in January to 4.3% in February – and high inflation delivery from November 2023 – and long-term inflation bearing from 3.3% to 3.3%, per release .
“It only fifts in the fifth time in 14 years we’ve seen a big monthly increase (a percentage point or more) of the year expectations,” HSU says in release.
