Davies injury setback keeps Postecoglou in ‘tight spot’

A depleted Tottenham will be without Ben Davies at home to Wolves on Sunday after the defender suffered a setback during his return from a hamstring injury.

Wales international Davies has not featured since Spurs’ 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth on December 5, with manager Ange Postecoglou expecting the 31-year-old to miss a “couple more weeks” .

Center back Radu Dragusin is a doubt after being sent off during Tottenham’s 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest on Thursday, adding to an injury list that includes Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.

Spurs vs Wolves: ‘Another Test’

“We are in a difficult spot and have been for some time,” Postecoglou said. “The nature of football and the schedule of matches means that we have always been on a fine line. It is another test for us.”

Tottenham’s only goal in their last nine games came at bottom side Southampton, who have scored four fewer goals than any other team in the top flight.

Postecoglou, who has moved 18-year-old Archie Gray from midfield to defense to help ease the situation, said it was “a bit early to say” whether Dragusin will be involved at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“He tweaked his ankle and felt he couldn’t go on,” the Australian added after Anthony Elanga scored the game’s only goal. “We have to wait and see.”

Tottenham results

Spurs have lost four of their last five league games, with their 5-0 win at Saints on December 15 representing their only win in their last six games in the top flight.

Wolves won 2-0 at home to Manchester United on Thursday and made it back-to-back wins since the appointment of Vitor Pereira as manager.

They are now eighth top scorers in the division and one point ahead of third-placed Leicester City.
