Is it really possible to understand another’s mind?

Technically speaking, neuroscientists have been able to read your mind for decades. It’s not easy, mind you. First, you should probably lie motionless in the fMRI scanner for hours while you watch movies or listen to audiobooks.

If you choose to endure claustrophobic hours in the scanner, the software will learn to reconstruct what you’re seeing or hearing in retrospect, by analyzing how blood circulates in your brain.

Recently, researchers have deployed generative AI tools, such as static propagation and GPT, to create more realistic, if not completely accurate, reconstructions of movies and podcasts based on neural activity. So how close are we to true “mind reading”? Read the full story.
