Get into gear with Magic’s Wild New Racing Set

Magic: The Gathering has played with dozens and dozens of genres and moods in its long history, but “racing” and “sci-fantasy card game” aren’t exactly the first things that come to mind when you think of it. of potential mashups. This has changed MagicThe next major expansion, and we have a look at some of the new cards lined up on the starting block.
Centered around a multi-versal racing tournament, Aetherdrift is built around the plan in MagicThe vast cosmology formerly known as Kaladesh (recently renamed Avishkar onwards Aetherdriftthe release of the cause of controversial interpretations of its inspiration from Hindi), as 10 racing teams compete for success through the planes as they race in the Ghirapur Grand Prix, a glitzy celebration of Avishkar’s underground racing history that offers a fascinating grand prize : the Aetherspark, a mysterious device that theoretically holds. the power to let his welder use the the powers of a Planeswalkereven if they lack the latent power to be one. But even to take the opportunity to get the Etherspark, you need a pass – and Aetherdrift has a lot to offer in its new cards, such as Possession Engine, which you can check out below in all its variants!
Magic: The Gathering – Aetherdrift Preview: Possession Engine
As you can see in the preview above Possession engine (with borderless alternate art and even gold-cut “fun booster” variants), the Vehicle subtype for artifact cards will play a major role in Aetherdrift. While the vehicles appeared in Magic before, now many of them in Aetherdrift comes with a new mechanic, Crew, abilities activated by tapping a certain number of untapped creatures you control with a total power greater than the required number. In Motor PossessionIn the event, having the right amount of equipment will allow you to target one of your opponents creatures, preventing you from being able to attack or block until it is in play.
Magic: The Gathering – Aetherdrift Preview: Marshal’s Pathcruiser
The crew isn’t the only new mechanic coming Aetherdrift which is related to the running theme – sometimes a runner has to go all out to a desperate extent to try and get a leg up, and this comes in the form of Exhaust. Exhaust abilities can only be used once, and their high cost usually comes with a potentially high reward. As you can see in our preview of Marshal’s Pathcruiser above, its Exhaust ability allows it to swap Artifact subtypes from Vehicle to creature (allowing it to be used as equipment for other Vehicles), and boosts its stats with two extra +1/+1 counters.
You will see these cards, and many more, in action when Magic: The Gathering – Aetherdrift hits shelves starting February 14th.
