Mobile & Gadgets:

Google app showing new sub-toolbar for search pages

The Google app on Android has long used the Chrome Custom Tab, and now has a new toolbar when opening Search results and Discovery articles.

Currently, all the controls are placed on the top panel: Close tab, Minimize tab, Site info, page name and domain (you can long press to copy URL), Share link, Add to Collection and overflow menu. This results in a very narrow strip where the page title is barely visible.

Pages you open in the Google app now have a lower toolbar with Save, Search, and Share, including Discover articles and Search results. It’s still a Chrome Custom Tab.

New with current

This new UI is not visible for pages opened via Google Lens or Circle to Search. The page title can be read more, one-handed access to the system Sharing report is quite nice. It’s also convenient to be able to do a new search from something you’re reading.

The bottom toolbar, like the top toolbar, disappears as you scroll and has minimal impact on available real estate. The “Open in Chrome” link remains simple.

We see this in testing with the latest Google app beta (version 16.1.38). Not on stable channel yet.
