Google Lens now opens instantly to the camera

Now that we have Circular to searchGoogle Lens has been updated so that it immediately launches the camera viewfinder when launched on Android and iOS.

Previously, tap the Google Lens shortcut in the search bar (Pixel Launcher + widget + Google app) or on the app icon you can download. From the Play Store will open the gallery view. There’s a live preview above, but most of the page is dedicated to displaying images available on your devices, including your eight most recent screenshots and your entire camera roll for one-touch analysis. You had to click or swipe to activate the viewfinder.

Now opening Google Lens instantly opens the camera viewfinder to take a photo.

This change makes sense as the Circle to Search app grows on Android. (That said, this camera change is also live in the Google app on iOS.) Lens may be Google’s dedicated tool for the real world, while CtS is for what’s on your screen.

One small viewfinder tweak that Google has made recently is to use a circular view of your last photo instead of a rounded square. You can tap on this or swipe up to access the gallery. It connects to the date button in the upper right corner Introduced in 2024 and allows you to see previous visual searches.

Google last year simplified voice input you can long press the camera button and start speaking to add a text prompt to your photo. Additionally, Google is testing video search if you’re signed up for Search Labs (AI Insights and more).

We see that this Lens camera has changed in Android (16.0.7) and with the latest version of the Google app. iOS.
