After being discovered by some Earlier this month, Google detailed how Gemini “AI-powered responses” in Google Assistant will work on the Nest Mini and Audio, and how it will be tested.
New supporting document Here are the details: “You can experiment with new, more natural-sounding voices and get AI-powered answers from Google Assistant with the help of Gemini.” Specifically, Google Assistant will use “LLM to answer broader questions and provide deeper, AI-powered answers on general knowledge topics.”
How to test
You must be logged in to access Google Home Public Preview and enable the not-yet-widespread secondary “Experimental AI features” setting on that page. It is the same preference that governs AI camera history search and imagesas well as Help me create.
Note that currently only Nest Audio and the 2nd generation Nest Mini support this experience. You must have Voice Match enabled, Nest Hub is currently an exception. Finally, this “AI-powered experience is only available in English, in the US, and for users 18 and older.”
What’s new
As for what’s new with the improved Google Assistant with Gemini, you’ll:
- Learn more about the topic: “Can giraffes talk to each other?” you may ask. giraffe communication, habitat, etc. to get information about.
- Ask additional questions: You can always say “Hey Google” to ask additional questions.
- Interrupt Google Assistant at any time: Just say “Hey google” and ask for more information or change the request.
It’s not much different than what’s possible with Gemini Live on Android and iOS.
Google provides the standard disclaimer “AI responses from Google Assistant are experimental”:
- Do not rely on these answers as medical, legal, financial or other professional advice.
- These answers do not reflect the views of Google and should not be attributed to Google.
- Double check these answers as they may be inaccurate or inappropriate about people.
On the sounds front, when this experience is enabled, there should be “new, more natural-sounding sounds” under the Google Home Settings tab > Google Assistant > Assistant voice and sounds.
When you use this experience, “Google Assistant will ring before answering with an AI-powered response.”
