Dan Sheehan noted a hat-trick, but Ireland produced a disappointing errors from the performance in the final round of six nations as they fell beyond Italy 22-17 in Rome.
Full Hugo Keenan scored the other effort of Ireland, but four were what they could manage despite Italy watching Michele Lamaro Sin-Binned and Ross Vintcent showed a 20-minute red card.
Ireland stretched at 22-10 in front of the 58th minute, but Italy responded with the next score via Stephen Varney – Monty Ioane, marking a test in the first half – creating a nervous finish.
Despite further chances, Ireland was unable to score again, with Italy then gave a final opportunity to claim an unlikely victory, but one they could not get.
