Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has been linked with a move to Real Madrid after entering the final six months of his contract at Anfield.

There is no indication that he will sign a new contract with the club and he has his heart set on a move to the Santiago Bernabeu.

The England international has been one of the club’s best performers this season and his contributions have helped them reach the top of the Premier League and the Champions League group stage.

Liverpool fans are starting to worry about Alexander-Arnold’s long-term future at the club.

Not just the right-back, but Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk also face uncertainty over their futures due to their contract situation.

Reporter Ben Jacobs has provided the latest update on the transfer story, detailing the demands Alexander-Arnold has to sign a new contract at Anfield.

He said talkSPORT:

“Although Trent is not open to a mid-season move, what he wants from Liverpool, if he wants to extend, is a minimum three-year deal and, in the long term, to captain the football team.

“So keep an eye on whether Virgil van Dijk’s and Alexander-Arnold’s conversations are perhaps somehow connected. And if they tell Trent he’s going to be captain long term, does that affect Virgil van Dijk?

“But as of now, what I think we can say is that Liverpool are more confident that Van Dijk and Salah can stay, while Trent Alexander-Arnold feels like an open situation at the moment.”

Should Liverpool accept Alexander-Arnold’s demands?

The demands listed by Jacobs are not something Liverpool can’t meet.

The promise of team captaincy and a three-year contract is something a player of Alexander-Arnold’s talent and caliber deserves.

If the Merseyside club giving him that chance could get him to sign a new contract and spurn Real Madrid, then they should waste no time in offering him such a thing.

A player of his quality is not easy to find in world football and Liverpool are lucky to have him.

Not only Alexander-Arnold but Luis Diaz has also been linked with a move to La Liga.
