Despite being an extremely talented and explosive batsman in white-ball cricket, Guptill struggled to establish himself in the highly competitive Indian Premier League (IPL). Known for his aggressive stroke play and consistency in international cricket, the Kiwi captain has not been able to translate his success to the IPL stage.

During his sporadic appearances, Guptill featured in just 13 matches in as many seasons, managing to score 270 runs at an average of 22.5, including a solitary half-century. 1. Mumbai Indians (2016)

Guptill made his IPL debut with five-time champions Mumbai Indians in 2016. Coming into the team as a substitute player, he featured in three matches during the season. Guptill managed to score 57 runs, his highest contribution being a knock of 48 for MI.

The following season, Guptill was picked up by the Punjab Kings. While featuring in seven matches for the Mohali-based franchise, he struggled to make a significant impact. Guptill scored 132 runs, with an unbeaten 50 being the highest score.

After a gap of two years, Guptill returned to the prestigious tournament when Sunrisers Hyderabad signed him for the 2019 season. However, he got the chance to play in just three matches, scoring 81 runs, with a top score of 36.
