Matty Lee: GB Diver team that won Olympic gold alongside Tom Daley announces his retirement | New Olympic Games

Olympic champion Matty Lee – who won gold for the GB team along with Tom Daley in the 2020 Tokyo Games – announced his retirement from diving.
Lee and Daley won the Olympic gold at 10m men’s 10m Synchro in Covid-Postponed in 2021, the focus of a career that brought medals at every major international level.
The 26 -year -old, who underwent surgery in his spine in early 2024, announced his decision to retire on Instagram.
“After 20 years in the sport, it’s time to get away from diving,” he wrote.
“This decision was not easy, but since I lost my dad in 2022, I struggled to find the same passion I once had, it was my reason. Then there was injuries, surgery and the realization that I don’t want to be a man moving forward.”
Lee made his debut at the World Championship, just 17 in 2015. Two years later he won the world -wide 10m Synchro Silver along with Lois Toulson and then – the year after the success of the Olympic Games – he took Silver at the Men’s 20th event with No. 222.
A European title also came with Daley in Budapest in May 2021, the couple warming up for their victory in Tokyo, where they defied the chances of defeating Cao Yuan of China and Chen Aisen in Gold by 1.2 points.
Also, in 2022, Lee and Williams added the title of Commonwealth Games to their global silver, but in March last year Lee underwent a record on a L5/S1 disc in his spine – which excluded him from the Olympics.
Making his announcement, Leeds, who was born in Leeds, gave Lee tribute to Tim’s late father, as he thanked his family, friends, coaches, teammates and fans to help him throughout his career.
“What will follow?” wrote. “Honestly, I don’t know. And that’s as scary and exciting. But I know that. There’s more about diving than diving and I’m ready for it.”
