Netflix’s Emilia Pérez breaks new ground with her Oscar nominations

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced this year’s Oscar nominees and Emilia Perez leads the pack with 13. The musical crime drama broke the record for the most nods for non-English language films, surpassing Crouching tiger, hidden dragon and Rome (from Netflix ), which each had 10.

Emilia Perez nominations in the categories of best film, international film, supporting actress, cinematography, direction, editing, makeup and hairstyling, original score, original song (with two in that category), sound, adapted screenplay and best actress. The latter has extra significance since Karla Sofía Gascón is the first openly trans performer to earn an acting nomination. Even Elliot Page received a nomination for June in 2008, which was long before the transition of the actor. (Interestingly, I watched Glow TVwhich has been praised for its stark portrayal of trans experiences, is nowhere to be found among this year’s nominees).

Netflix had the most nominations of any distributor . An animated film that makes headlines short documentary film The only girl in the orchestra and original song nominee Diane Warren (for “The Journey” from The Six Triple Eight) took over the Netflix account at 16. Maybe Warren will finally win an Oscar this year to her. 16th time asking.

Mubi, another streaming company, has six nominations this year, including five for body horror film The Substance. Meanwhile, Disney+ scored one for Elton John and Brandi Carlile’s song “Never Too Late” from the documentary. Elton John: Never too late.

The names of the best films of this year are Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Emilia Pérez, I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys, The Substance and Bad.
