In 2017, the New York Times began experimenting with Nytrimes.com to be used as a Tor onion service. Since then, we have already known what is required to operate a Tor site and deepens our understanding of audience that can block access to our journalism. While this experiment is important, we have already used these students and apply it to strengthen our main page and signature products, and shut down Tor times effectively.

Users have many ways to access New York Times Journalism with our Main webpage,, Newsletters,, podcasts,, YouTube accounts and social media channels. Users who want to continue reading journalism times where their access to the main website can be blocked so whatsapp or wire.

Original post from October 27, 2017:

We currently inform an experiment in safe communication, and launch an alternative way for people to access our site: We make the nystimes.com The website to be used as a boring service.

New York Times reports stories around the world, and our reporting is read to people AROUND the world. Some readers choose to use Tor to access our journalism because they have not blocked access to our website; or because they are concerned about monitoring the local network; or because they care online privacy; or just because that’s the way they want.

Seasons are dedicated to delivering quality, independent journalism, and our engineering team is allowed to ensure that readers are safe. This is why we explore ways to improve readers’ experience using Tor to access our website.

One way we can help is setting up nytrimes.com as a series service – making our website accessible by a special, safe “tunnel” through Tor network.

This Onion Address can only be accessed by Tor Network, using special software as Tor Browser. Such tools assure our readers that our website can be reached without monitor or blocks, and they provide additional guarantees that readers safely on our website.

Onion services have for other organizations – better Facebook and Propublica, which each makes the usual tool to support their implements. Our anion service was built using open source Enterprise Onion Toolkit (EOTK)encompassing most of the configuration and effort of management.

New York Times onion service both experiments and under progress. This means that some parts, such as logins and comments, cannot be stopped until the next phase of our implementation. We will be a good show on the tuning site, to have occasional Outes while we make improvements in service. Our goal is to match parts that are available on the main website of New York Times.

Over time, we plan to share the lessons we learn – and learn – about serving and running on an onion service. We welcome feedback providers and BIG reports by email to Onion@nytime.com.

Finally, we want to thank Alec Muffett for his help with configuring the Enterprise Onion Toolkit for our site.
