Newcastle have made a record fee for Alexander Isak

Newcastle will challenge the clubs to break the British transport record if they want to sign striker Alexander Isak, it has been reported.

Isak, 25, has impressed since his move to Newcastle in 2022 and is enjoying another superb season, scoring 11 goals in 16 appearances, including seven in his last five Premier League appearances.

Such form has seen Isak linked with Premier League rivals Arsenal and Chelseawhile Barcelona, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have indicated they will try to lure the Sweden international to continental Europe.

Newcastlefor their part, they have no desire to part ways with Isak, and The Telegraph say they have set an asking price in excess of £150m for their superstar forward.

A fee of £150m would obliterate the current British record – Chelsea’s £106m signing of Enzo Fernandez – and make Issac the third most expensive signing of all time, behind only Kylian Mbappe’s £163m in Paris Saint-Germain in 2018 and the French. the side’s £198m signing of Neymar 12 months earlier.

Newcastle feel under no pressure to lower their asking price as Isak still has more than three years to run on his current deal, with talks over an extension expected to take place in the coming months.

Crucially, Newcastle are known to be at the mercy of the Premier League’s financial regulations, which forced them to accept bids for winger Anthony Gordon last summer before the final sales of Yankuba Mide and Elliott Anderson.

A major bid for Isak may not be ruled out immediately, but Newcastle have plenty of other players they would like to sell before making bids for Isak, while there is also hope that their recent revival will lead to a return to European football and the riches that accompany it.
