If you’ve ever wondered why a company makes certain decisions, you’ll usually have a hard time finding out the answer. Most companies, esp smartphone manufacturers prefer to keep the inner workings of their businesses secret, no matter how interesting or mundane the knowledge. However, we now get a rare glimpse into the inner workings of Nokia through a newly launched digital archive.
Today, Aalto University, located in Finland, announced that it has started operations Nokia Design Archive. Essentially a virtual museum of all things Nokia from the mid-90s to 2017, the archive features sketches, photos, presentations, interviews and more.
The archive’s digital portal is free for anyone interested in Nokia’s history. Looking at the different products and concepts over two decades is interesting enough, but that’s just one reason to check out this archive. What’s most interesting here is how ideas and decisions affect Nokia products and how everything is connected.
“Every big global company is trying to understand what motivates people, how we see the world around us, but you don’t want to let other people in on that thinking. It’s very important, but it just doesn’t leak out,” says lead researcher Professor Anna Valtonen. “The archive is one of the first opportunities to see what every organization does behind the scenes.”
Along with Valtonen, a team of designers, design historians, organization and management scholars is behind the creation of the archive. These researchers also hope to develop and add more content over time.
