Old flagships or new phones? This is a no brainer for you.

loads great android phones released every year, bringing yearly improvements like more AI features, better cameras, increased performance and brighter screens. However, these new flagship devices often come with expensive price tags.

Then colleague Ryan Haines pointed out that you don’t have to buy a brand new phone. He Recommended the Pixel 8 Pro as one of the best old flagship phones worth buying. In his article, we added a poll asking users whether they prefer new phones or older flagships. And here’s how it went.

Thinking of buying an old flagship phone?

We posted surveys on our site, Twitter pageand YouTube accountand all three surveys show that most of you would rather buy an older device than a new flagship phone. More than three-quarters of readers surveyed said they always buy old phones, and nearly two-thirds of Twitter followers voted this way. The YouTube poll was a closer-fought issue, as 55% of voters said they preferred to buy older devices.

Across all three platforms, respondents gave different reasons for preferring older flagship phones over newer releases. Many users pointed to discounted prices, and some pointed to perennials renew commitments on old phones as a reason to buy them.

Some users, like YouTuber @rosaria8384, have suggested that the new phones have only minor improvements over the older devices:

Given the incremental changes between models, I’d rather buy the previous model.

It’s hard to argue with that, especially when it comes to phones from some brands like Samsung. For example, Galaxy S24 it’s basically the S23 with a brighter screen, newer chipset and better update policy. But even phones that look like more significant improvements on paper aren’t all that different from their predecessors.

Still, several respondents cited their reasons for buying a new phone, one reason being long-term use.

“Since my phones usually last four years or more, I always buy new phones,” said follower MrZequal.

“No, I have never bought a used phone. Rather than buying used phones more often, I’d rather buy a new one and keep it for years,” added reader Rac3r4Life.
