OnePlus has launched the global version of its latest flagship smartphone OnePlus 13to glowing reviews last week. Although many, including myself, have praised it as one of the best best android phones you can buy now, we understand that it is not flawless. One thing that many reviewers have brought up is that almost all of its new AI features require internet access, which OnePlus could solve with mobile-optimized large language models (LLM). OnePlus is now rolling out its first software update for the global OnePlus 13, which adds support for Google’s Gemini Nano AI model.
Gemini Nano Google’s Gemini is the smallest version of the big language model. A flagship Android phone with enough memory and AI accelerators like the OnePlus 13 is small enough to run fast enough. Before today’s firmware update to CPH2655_15.0.0.402(EX01), the OnePlus 13 didn’t. Support Gemini Nano because the Android AICore software needed to download the model was missing. After installing the update, my OnePlus 13 now has Android AICore. After a quick update to the app from the Google Play Store, after opening the Google Messages app and tapping the button, my OnePlus 13 started downloading Google’s Gemini Nano. Magic Composition button.

Magic Compose is an experimental feature of the Google Messages app that uses generative artificial intelligence to provide suggested responses based on the context of your conversation. On most Android devices, your messages are processed in the cloud by Google’s AI models. On devices that support Gemini Nano, your messages are processed locally and never leave your device. This is true for the OnePlus 13 after today’s software update, as evidenced by the message that appears when you tap the flask icon in the Magic Compose window.

as Xiaomi 14T Pro and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6OnePlus 13 Uses Gemini Nano to Create Magic Only in Google Messages In contrast, the Gemini Nano powers a wider range of features on supported Pixel phones, such as summaries in the Pixel Recorder app and smart replies in Gboard. On it Pixel 9 series, it powers additional features like screenshot processing in the Pixel Screenshots app and call summaries in the Google Phone app. These last two are made possible thanks to the improved multimodal capabilities in the Gemini Nano model available in the Pixel 9 series.
Qualcomm said it Snapdragon 8 Elite the chipset will support Google’s multi-mode Gemini Nano model, which means the OnePlus 13 should have the same model as the Pixel 9. Considering that the AICore app takes up ~3.8GB on my OnePlus 13 and ~1.3GB on my Galaxy Z Fold 6. , it looks like the OnePlus 13 does indeed have a newer multi-mode version. However, there are currently no new features using it. This may change in the near future AI Edge SDK It opens up to more developers as it allows Android apps to use the multimodal Gemini Nano model for their features. When I tried running Google’s sample Gemini Nano app, it didn’t work on the OnePlus 13, which may be because it doesn’t have access to a version of AICore with experimental APIs.
