Premier League Predictions: Matchday 23

Gameweek 23 acts as a useful reflection point for Premier League clubs, as all 20 teams prepare to “lock in” with the opponents they met on the opening weekend of the season.

Some will be longing to return in August so they can right the wrongs of the first half of the campaign, while others will be surprised by the progress they have made since the start of the 2024/25 season.

Either way, there are some tantalizing fixtures, with Chelsea’s trip to Manchester City the highlight of another exciting weekend of action. Saturday is packed with storytelling as the top three are all in action during the afternoon slot.

The Europa League outings will be felt by Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United on Sunday, with both teams desperate to turn the corner after difficult runs. The out-of-form duo are just ten points clear of the relegation zone.

There is no early kick-off on Saturday, but there are five eye-catching clashes during the 15:00 GMT slot, with the league leaders Liverpool among those who act. Having made ground on their title rivals last weekend, the tall reds will be aiming to extend their advantage further as they host the 18th Ipswich Town. The Tractor Boys will need a miracle to overcome Arne Slot’s side.

Liverpool’s top rivals for Premier League the crown is also in action. Arsenal make the trip to the Midlands to tackle Wolverhampton Wanderers as they aim to redeem themselves after last weekend’s slide. The Gunners won the reverse fixture 2-0 and will be buoyed by the fact that the Old Gold have lost their last three league matches.

Nottingham Forest will be keeping a close eye on the Gunners and Reds this weekend. Tricky Trees are currently third in the table and six points adrift of fifth place as they look for surprise Champions League qualification. A journey with face in form Bournemouthunbeaten in ten league matches, will prove a strong challenge for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.

David Moyes secured his first comeback victory Everton last time out as the Toffees upset Spurs and will aim to build momentum against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday. The Seagulls rediscovered their mojo after back-to-back wins, including a third consecutive triumph at Old Trafford last Sunday.

Newcastle United suffered a setback in their push for Champions League qualification as it was humiliated by Bournemouth last time but the trip down the table Southampton should prove more fruitful. The Saints have picked up just six points this season and already look destined for relegation.

The blockbuster of the weekend comes in the bright spot of Saturday as Chelsea visit Manchester City. Neither team is in particularly encouraging form, with the Cityzens holding a two-goal lead during 4-2 humiliation against Paris Saint-Germain midweek. The Blues won last Monday against Wolves, but had previously gone five games without a win.

The Hammers stumbled to a crushing defeat at the hands of Palace last weekend and will be underdogs against the Villans, who suffered a disappointing European defeat in Monaco on Tuesday.

Manchester United were far from convincing on Thursday night as a stoppage time winner put Rangers away in the Europa League. After last weekend’s disappointing defeat to Brighton, Ruben Amorim’s side must improve when they travel to Fulham looking for three critical points. The Cottagers sit seven points clear of the Red Devils and will fancy their chances of heaping more misery on the 13-time Premier League champions.
