Punjab Kings appoint Shreyas Iyer as captain for IPL 2025

Star India Batter Shreyas Iyer has been officially appointed as its captain Punjab Kings (PBKS) for its 2025 edition Indian Premier League (IPL). The announcement marks a major move for the 30-year-old, who has been in stunning form as both a player and leader over the last year.
Iyer, who was captain Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to an IPL title in the 2024 edition, released by the franchise in the next off-season. Punjab Kings secured his services for a staggering INR 26.74 crore during the IPL 2025 auction, making him the second most expensive purchase of the season.
A stellar year for Shreyas Iyer
In particular, the last 12 months have been a career-defining period for Iyer. Apart from leading KKR to victory in the 2024 IPL, he was also the captain Bombay at Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title, demonstrating his leadership skills in various forms.

He emphasized the strength of the team, highlighting the mix of promising talent and experienced players, and expressed his determination to lead them to their maiden IPL title, fulfilling the faith he has shown in him.
“I am honored that the team believed in me. I’m looking forward to working with coach (Ricky) Ponting again. The squad looks strong, with a great mix of potential and proven performers. I hope to repay the faith shown by the management to deliver our maiden title,” Iyer was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
