Ruben Amorim reveals Man Utd’s plan for Marcus Rashford against Liverpool

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has revealed that an illness will likely keep Marcus Rashford out of action for Sunday’s trip to Liverpool.

The former exiled forward he returned to his first team on the weekend against Newcastle on Monday night. Rashford remained on the bench while his team-mates suffered dismantling in front of their own fans, eventually escaping with Defeat 2-0.

Amorim explained that the England international – who had missed the previous four matches amid intense speculation of an imminent exit – was always available for selection but noted that “we have a lot of players out”. Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte were both sent off for the club’s fourth straight defeat on Monday but are available again for the trip to Anfield.

Rashford is likely to miss the upcoming trip along the M62 due to illness. “Right now he’s sick, he’s not training,” Amorim told the assembled media on Friday. “I think he’ll be out this week. We’ll see.”

Rashford sparked heated rumors linking him with a move away after giving an interview last month in which he revealed his desire for “a new challenge”. After weeks of relentless transfer gossip, the forward hit the debate as “ridiculous” and “fake”.

That hasn’t stopped the steady churn of speculation. Few elite European clubs are believed to be able – or willing – to finance a move for Rashford and his big wages, leaving the Saudi Pro League as his most likely destination. However, the 27-year-old has reportedly turned down offers from three Saudi clubs this month, slashing wages believed to be worth up to £35m a year.

Move to La LigaBarcelona, in particular, are reportedly Rashford’s preferred outcome of this grueling saga, but the Catalans don’t have the funds to even finance a loan deal.

As the United academy graduate faces another week watching from the sidelines, his future remains as uncertain as ever.
