Steve Smith denies David Warner a six with incredible effort in BBL

Steve Smith, the Sydney Sixers cricketer, continued his impressive streak of saving boundaries with a remarkable effort during the BBL 2024-25 match against Sydney Thunder. Steve Smith makes an acrobatic save near the boundary at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney on Friday 17 January.

Steve Smith leads Sydney Sixers into crucial Sydney Smash vs Sydney Thunder clash, led by veteran opener David Warner. This match could shake up the top three spots in BBL 2024-25. However, play was delayed due to heavy rain after just five overs at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Sydney Sixers Win Bat Flip and Opt to Field

The Sydney Sixers won the bat and elected to field, with Warner and new Australian Test star Sam Konstas opening for the Thunder. Jack Edwards started with a maiden over but Warner quickly hit a boundary before rain stopped play after 1.4 overs.

The match resumed under revised conditions, with 19 overs per side. Konstas managed to score 9 off 14 balls, including two fours, before being dismissed by Edwards.

The incident happened on the first ball of the 5th over when David Warner tried to trouble bowler Todd Murphy. Warner stepped out and lofted the ball towards the long off. Steve Smith pulled off a stunning effort to save a six.

Smith threw the ball back downfield before going outside and returning to complete the catch. With no one around to help, the former Australia captain saved four runs for his side with his remarkable effort to field.

The official Big Bash League social media account X (formerly known as Twitter) shared the clip of Smith’s effort with the caption, “That’s elite from @stevesmith49 πŸ‘. What a way to save a six! #BBL14”

Steve Smith has been the standout star of the Test in Australia’s T20 competition this season. He started strongly with a remarkable century against the Scorchers in his first match, followed it up with a 50 in his second appearance, leading to a win over the Strikers.

Sydney Thunder scored 36 runs from 5.1 overs after being put into bat by the Sydney Sixers at the SCG. David Warner was at the crease with 22 runs while Hugh Weibgen had scored 1 run.
