Sunil Gavaskar and Matthew Hayden reveal the ultimate plan to solve India’s batting crisis

Former Indian National Cricket Team player Sunil Gavaskar has shared advice for the Rohit Sharma-led side ahead of the fourth Test of the series against the Australian national cricket team. He said batsmen need to spend more time at the crease as it will allow them to get a feel for what the pitch is like.

The Indian national cricket team is all set to face the Australian national cricket team in the fourth match of the test series. Try Boxing Day between the teams kicks off on Thursday (December 26) at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne.

India’s batsmen have struggled to get the series going. Apart from KL Rahul, no other batsman has been pinned down at the crease as he has tried to make quick runs. The opening batsman has spent a lot of time at the crease, and it is fair to say that he is the reason for his success in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 series.

Yashasvi Jaiswal spent some time in the middle in the first Test and came up big as he hit a blistering century. But after that, he could not get going as senior batsmen Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Rishabh pantsand others have been impatient, which is the reason for their failure.

Don’t look at a scoreboard, just look at the clock and just get there – Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar urged the Indian National Cricket Team batsmen not to look at the scoreboard and advised them to spend time at the crease. He said their main aim for the first few is to be there until lunchtime as it will give them a great idea of the pitch.

Sunil Gavaskar also added that Yashasvi Jaiswal struggles with the new ball in the first over. So, according to him, KL Rahul should go on strike. Speaking to Star Sports, he explained:

“…don’t look at a score. Just look at the clock and get there. That’s what I want to be here for lunch. And then because it gives you a little bit of time to settle in, it also gives you an idea of what is the field,” said Sunil Gavaskar.

“…because (Jaiswal) has now got out twice in the first innings in three deliveries, first ball in Adelaide, second ball here (Brisbane), maybe Rahul takes the first ball.” Sunil Gavaskar added.

At the moment I just feel there is an urgency around India’s batting: Matthew Hayden

Matthew Haydenwho was part of the discussion around Sunil Gavaskar, said he had felt the urgency around India’s batting. He suggested that batsmen need to find a way to get through the new ball.

While citing the example of Nathan Mcsweeny, Matthew Hayden said that although the batsman has not scored runs, he has found a way to bat for longer. Speaking about the wicket in Melbourne, he explained:

“At the moment I feel there is an urgency around India’s batting. Technically, find a way to get through the new ball. Try to find a way to stay and stay at the crease.

Nathan McSweeney hasn’t ignited this series, but what he has done is resist the urge to exit early. Usman Khawaja is somewhat the same. And that’s Australian conditions. It’s a new ball port. Melbourne will be no different, and neither will Sydney.”
