Apple was initially rumored to be accepting OLED panels for the MacBook Pro and Air in 2026 and 2027, respectively. However, due to lower than expected demand for OLED iPad Pro (M4)the company may delay the transition of the Air model to OLED until 2029. Nevertheless, the MacBook Air is still set to receive a welcome display update in 2027.
according to The ElecThe MacBook Air will ditch the amorphous silicon (a-Si) TFT LCD in favor of an oxide TFT LCD in 2027. Apple’s Pro laptop models got this technology for the first time in 2022, contributing to longer battery life, more vibrant colors, higher contrast ratio and other display improvements. While this upgrade isn’t as impressive as the switch to OLED on the MacBook Air, it’s a welcome boost compared to the current amorphous silicon TFT LCD.
It should be noted that the MacBook Pro will stick to the original plan and debut with OLED in 2026. So, instead of waiting for the 2029 MacBook Air, those who want a great display can opt for the Pro model next year. However, given the ever-changing nature of Apple rumors, it’s unlikely that the company will change those goals or scrap them at some point before then.
Meanwhile, the iPhone maker may release the M4 MacBook Air models as early as this month. Near the end of this year, Apple may also upgrade the 2024 MacBook Pro from the M4 to the M5. Both releases are likely to revolve around incremental performance boosts rather than significant changes to the interior or exterior.
