The best VPN for Apple TV in 2025

NordVPN

NordVPN is a great VPN, but if you plan to use it on your Apple TV, you may be disappointed. In my experience, NordVPN’s Apple TV app isn’t as user-friendly as most competitors. Browsing servers is a pain because you have no choice but to go through a list of servers that are not sorted by any difference. For a VPN with servers in 111 different countries, this choice of user interface is confusing. Alternatively, you can search for a specific server, but server slots don’t start filling until you enter the third letter of your search. These are minor gripes, to be sure – but it’s still down to me on ease of use.

Even if you can get past the clunky design of NordVPN’s Apple TV app, you’re not in the clear — the app’s streaming capabilities are terrible. When testing NordVPN’s Apple TV app, I encountered error messages on every title I tried to stream to every external Netflix library I tried to access. Hulu detected the VPN and blocked my access to its content even though I connected through US servers.

Disney Plus, Apple TV Plus, Amazon Prime Video and US Netflix worked well. Still, streaming is the main reason the vast majority of people prefer a VPN on their Apple TV, and if NordVPN can’t quite get it right, I suggest switching to a VPN that can. I wholeheartedly recommend NordVPN as a solid choice for everything else, not Apple TV.

PrivateVPN

PrivateVPN is a relatively new VPN provider that has made strides in the industry over the past few years. It’s not the best option, but its Apple TV app is a decent option for casual users who just want to stream content. I like how the app makes it possible to search for servers based on latency, which can potentially help you find servers with optimal performance and ensure your streaming experience stays smooth. You can also set favorite servers and browse locations alphabetically, but strangely there’s no option to search for server locations. In any case, during my tests and streaming, the instant connection software was always unbuffered, despite PrivadoVPN’s poor speed performance during our most recent speed tests.

PrivadoVPN offers a free plan that’s fine for casual browsing, but due to its 10GB monthly limit (enough to stream a movie or two a month), I don’t recommend streaming it on an Apple TV or any other device. If this is enough for you, give it a try. During my tests, PrivadoVPN’s free tier failed to give me access to both Netflix and Disney Plus streaming content — though I was able to stream Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and Apple TV Plus content on the free plan. With the paid plan, I was able to access streaming content on each of these streaming services, as well as Netflix and Disney Plus. Proton VPN

Proton VPN is one of the best VPNs out there, so I was excited to try out its new Apple TV app when it was released in October. I found the app easy to use, with countries organized in an alphabetical grid format — making it easy to locate and connect to a server. I was able to instantly connect to every server I tried and access content on a variety of streaming platforms, including Netflix, Disney Plus, Apple TV Plus, Amazon Prime Video, Max, and Hulu.

Although the app is fully functional and works well on streaming platforms, it’s the lamest Apple TV VPN app I’ve ever come across. It’s true that the Apple TV apps released by other VPNs don’t exactly offer a lot of features, but Proton VPN’s app does. Proton VPN’s Apple TV app is completely devoid of any settings or options. There is no option to search for a country or set a specific server as a favorite. There is also no option to select specific cities within any country.

For these reasons, Proton VPN’s Apple TV app falls short of the best options in this category. The app is still new and Proton VPN will surely improve the app with additional features and additional functionality in future releases. If you’re okay with the app’s limited functionality, it’s still a solid choice for streaming, and Proton VPN is a great VPN for a variety of use cases.
