The European club want Rohl with Southampton to worry about Sheffield Wednesday

Following earlier links to the vacant Southampton job, reports in Germany now suggest so Danny Rohl has been identified as a candidate for the managerial role at a European club in another concern for Sheffield Wednesday.

Rohl is a sued man

Ask anyone who’s been tracking his progress, and they’ll tell you the recent interest in Rohl should come as no surprise. Still only 35, the German has dragged Sheffield Wednesday from relegation concerns to the top half of the game. championship in what must be applauded as a fantastic success. Now, however, the Owls could be victims of their own manager’s success.

They are eyeing one of Rohl’s young talents ahead of the opening of the winter window.

Having shown Russell Martin the door just hours after his side’s 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur, Southampton are on the hunt for the manager they believe will keep them and as such Rohl’s name has been mentioned in the last days

Of course, it would be a big step forward for such a young manager, but also one to watch with intrigue. But Saints aren’t the only club interested, it seems.

According to reports in Germany, relayed by Joe Crann of The Star, Hamburger SV has now identified Rohl as a candidate for his vacant directorship. The 2. Bundesliga side showed Steffan Baumgart the door at the end of November after a run of five wins and have been searching for a permanent replacement since then without success.

For now, Rohl remains in charge of the Owls ahead of this weekend’s clash with Stoke City in the Championship, but it remains to be seen whether that will continue in the coming months.

Sheffield Wednesday need Rohl’s contingency

Bucking the ongoing trend in football management, the ball appears to be in the manager’s court and not the club’s when it comes to his future. Rohl has built a luxury position in which his job is secure and a big move looks on the horizon. Whether he takes one of those big jobs is anyone’s guess at this stage, but he’s certainly capable.

With this fact, however, Sheffield Wednesday must think of a possible contingency plan. They need to take a look at what life would be like without the always impressive Rohl at the helm. And they must ensure that their reality without him does not involve relegation to League One.

Meanwhile, still only 35, the Owls boss shouldn’t be in too much of a hurry. After all, get the next move wrong and the current reputation that has been built up will quickly diminish, perhaps making Southampton the wrong choice and a relegation to the 2. Bundesliga an unambitious move.

While he’s still at the top, it seems as though Sheffield United should simply enjoy the run Rohl currently has them on, heading towards a top-half finish.
