The Nokia Design Archive has over 20 years of never-before-seen images, sketches and strategy.

It’s an understatement to say that cell phones have evolved in more than 30 years since they entered mainstream society. But despite all the things our smartphones offer, they will never hit the same level as those first models. Now, there is the opportunity to go back in time, thanks to the new digital Nokia Design Archive sharing sketches, photos, interviews and videos from the mid-1990s to 2017.

Aalto University, in Nokia’s home country of Finland, is responsible for the Nokia Design Archive. His team of researchers curated 700 entries and included a repository with another 20,000 items and 959 GB of digital files born. The content never seen by Nokiawhich released its first GSM mobile phone in 1992, does not disappoint. Anyone feeling extra nerdy (ahem, me) can also read presentations with mood boards and design.

The nostalgia dive that follows not only provides an ode to classic Nokia devices (and their very 90s style), but also an interesting look into the evolution of technology. “In the early days of Nokia, there was a real desire to understand people, how they live, what makes them tick. Now we are at a similar point of social transformation with AI. No one has concretized what that is yet, but we it wants to make people think about what could be,” said Professor Anna Valtonen in a statement. “The Archive reveals how designers made visions concrete so that they could be carefully explored long before they became reality. It reminds us that we have agency and can shape our world – revealing the work of many people who have done so “.

The Design Archive looks a bit like a word chart floating in space, with topics including Mobile Games and Gaming – which provides an overview of the creation of the famous Snake game – and Phones Fashion and Accessories. The free platform offers four topic filters: products, aesthetics, design process and design strategy. In addition, you can limit in specific years for a better look at the time period of your favorite model. The team hopes to continue adding more content as the project develops further.
