There are no billionaires in FOSDEM
Jack Dorsey, ex-Twitter CEO, ousted BlueSky board member, and rarer grifter of $5.6B net worth, is giving a keynote at FOSDEM.
The FOSDEM keynote stage is one of the largest platforms in the free software community. Janson is the event’s largest venue – its large auditorium can accommodate over 1,500 of FOSDEM’s 8,000 unique attendees, and it is live streamed to a worldwide audience as the face of one of the free and open source software community’s biggest event of the year. We have platformed Red Hat, the NLNet Foundation, NASA, many prominent community leaders, and many smaller projects that embody our values and spirit in this area to discuss their work or important challenges facing the our community.
Some of these challenges are, in fact, Jack Dorsey’s fault. In 2023 this period hosted by Hachyderm’s Kris Nová to discuss an exodus of Twitter refugees into the fediverse. After Dorsey sold Twitter to Elon Musk, selling the platform to the far right for a cool billion-with-a-“B” dollar payout, the FOSS community shouldered the burden – of our work and our wallets – in a massive exodus to our volunteer-run servers, especially from victims fleeing the speech and harassment left behind after the sale. Two years later one of the chief architects of, and beneficiaries of, that disaster would rise to the same stage. Although our community was not directly harmed by Dorsey’s actions, I don’t think we owe this honor to someone who took a billion dollars to destroy their project, alienate their users, and destroyed the livelihoods of almost everyone who worked on. this.
Dorsey was probably platformed by Janson because his blockchain bullshit company is a main sponsor of FOSDEM this year. Dorsey and his colleagues want to bring us up to speed on what Block is doing these days. Let me give you a preview: in addition to posting $5B in revenue and a 21% YoY revenue increase in 2024, Jack Dorsey fired 1,000 employees, ordering them not to talk publicly the allegations of Jay-Z’s contemporary sexual assault on the board member. their way, and announced a new bitcoin mining ASIC in collaboration with Core Scientific, which probably installed them in their new 100MW Muskogee, OK bitcoin mining installationproudly served by
Muskogee Generating Station fossil fuel power plant and its 11 million tons of annual CO2 emissions and an estimated 62 excess deaths in the local area due to pollution related to the power plant. Nice.
In my view, billionaires are not welcome at FOSDEM. If billionaires want to join FOSS, I ask them to refrain from using our platforms to discuss their AI/blockchain/bitcoin/climate-disaster-as-a-service grifty business ventures, and instead buy our respect by, say, donating 250 million dollars to NLNet or the Sovereign Tech Fund. That number, as a percentage of Dorsey’s fortune, is proportional to the amount of money I donate to FOSS every year, though. That kind of money will keep the FOSS community running for decades.
I don’t want to platform Jack Dorsey at this stage. For that purpose, I organized a sit-in, where I and anyone who joins me will sit on Janson’s stage during his allotted time slot and peacefully prevent the speech from proceeding as scheduled. We will meet at 11:45 PM outside Janson, 15 minutes before Dorsey’s scheduled time slot. Once the stage is free from the previous speaker, we will sit on the stage until 12:30 PM. Bring a good book. If you would like to help organize this sit-in, or just let me know you want to participate, please contact me via
email; I will create a mailing list if there is enough interest to organize things like printing pamphlets to this effect, or even to prepare an alternative speech to the “schedule” of his slot.
