Remedy might be best known for Alan Wake and Control, but its April 2016 release was a completely different experiment in pushing the boundaries of video game storytelling. Players assume the role of Jack Joyce, a man with time manipulation powers who is trying to stop the coming of the end of time. But the problem is that his ex-best friend Paul Serene stands in his way – with superpowers of his own and an entire private army at his disposal.
Quantum Break mixes standard third-person cover shooter gameplay with time manipulation capabilities, allowing the player to close the distance against enemies, stop bullets and more. Outside of combat, these powers are used to solve puzzles and find extra pieces of history, remaining a key system to engage with for anyone trying to get rid of all the extra lore.
The thing that distinguishes Quantum Break from any other video game is the television connection: at the end of each act, an interactive TV episode would play before returning to run and disappear in Joyce’s shoes, and it would change depending on who. choices you made in the game. A completely new concept (even before Black Mirror’s Bandersnatch), the Quantum Break show featured electrifying performances from the likes of Shawn Ashmore, Aidan Gillen and the late, great Lance Reddick.
The mix of media was released to mixed critical results, but there is no other game that has tried to do what this has in the years after its release.
