Tottenham’s extensive injury list is a mitigating factor for their recent performances, with defensive injuries causing massive problems for Postecoglou. Guglielmo Vicario, Ben Davies, Mickey van de Ven and Cristian Romero are all out for Saturday’s clash.
Destiny Udogie joins them in the treatment room after retreating to recent draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers due to a hamstring problem that will rule him out for around six weeks. The good news for Postecoglou is that Djed Spence is available again after suspension.
Wilson Odobert, Richarlison and Mikey Moore are all unavailable in the front line, while Rodrigo Bentancur is suspended again after his fifth yellow card of the season against Wolves.
Tottenham predicted line-up against Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Forster? Porro, Dragusin, Gray, Spence; Bissouma, Sarr; Johnson, Kulusevski, Son; Solanke.
Newcastle are without several defenders themselves, with Fabian Sarr adding his name to the absentee list after picking up his fifth booking of the season in the win over Manchester United. Jamaal Lascelles, Nick Pope and Emil Kraft are also missing in the back line.
Sven Botman is closing in on a return from a ten-month injury lay-off, but Saturday is likely to come too soon for the Dutch defender. Lloyd Kelly will be called into central midfield to partner Dan Byrne.
Callum Wilson is still a long way from his hamstring injury, meaning the in-form Alexander Isak, who has an excellent record against Spurs, will lead the line.
Newcastle predicted line-up against Tottenham (4-3-3): Dubravka? Livramento, Kelly, Burn, Hall; Tonali, Guimaraes, Joelinton; Murphy, Isaac, Gordon.
Newcastle have an impressive recent record against Spurs, winning four of their last five clashes. They have enjoyed convincing home wins of 6-1 and 4-0, while also beating Tottenham away in 2022/23. Their impressive form and improved consistency undoubtedly make them favorites against their injured hosts.
Tottenham’s problems have been clear in defense this season and they are unlikely to see dramatic improvements against Newcastle. The likes of Isak, Anthony Gordon and the in-form Jacob Murphy are set to punish a much-changed backline.
Spurs are always a goal threat themselves and are the second-highest scorers in the division, but their leaky rearguard could prove costly again this weekend.
Prediction: Tottenham 1-2 Newcastle
