Trump comments on TikTok ban: “stay tuned”

Just ahead Supreme Court ruling today – which saw the nation’s highest court uphold the law banning TikTok in the United States from January 19 – Donald Trump posted on Social Truth that he had a “very good” phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, which included discussion of TikTok. In addition, the president-elect said that he will make a decision on TikTok in the “not too distant” future, but did not say what he would do.

Trump has previously signaled that he is no longer in favor of the ban, after all urged the Supreme Court to block the law Demanding that the app be closed or sold from January 19, but in his message today he said that he will make a decision in the future, but first he needed “time to review the situation.” He also said that the Supreme Court’s decision was “awaited”.

“Stay tuned!” he wrote.

Before the sentence, Trump had also written on Truth Social that he had a good call with Xi this morning and that it was his expectation that “they will solve a lot of problems together”, starting immediately.

“We discussed trade balance, fentanyl, TikTok, and many other subjects,” wrote Trump on his social platform. “President Xi and I will do everything possible to make the world more peaceful and secure!”

Shortly after the call, the Supreme Court decided that the ban passed. This means that the app will be closed in the United States unless it is sold – something that TikTok has argued that it could not do in the allotted time.

It is unclear whether TikTok will effectively go dark on January 19 or whether it will continue to operate on users’ devices where it is already installed, as there have been reports indicating both scenarios. However, the Biden administration was said to consider ways to keep TikTok available in the United States, even if the ban was upheld.
