Trump Pardons Former Silk Road Co-Founder and Bitcoin Icon Ross Ulbricht

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he would pardon Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the online marketplace Silk Road.

On social media post On Truth Social, Trump said he had granted a “full and unconditional pardon” to Ulbricht, citing support from the libertarian movement and criticizing the government’s handling of Ulbricht’s case.

Ulbricht, 40, was convicted in 2015 of drug-trafficking and money-laundering charges related to Silk Road, a darknet site that generated billions of dollars in illegal drug transactions.

He was sentenced to two life sentences and 40 years of parole, sparking years of debate over the fairness of his sentence.

“The crooks working to impeach him are the same lunatics involved in arming the current administration against me,” Trump wrote.

The favor is expected to draw strong reactions from fans and critics alike.

Ulbricht’s supporters have long argued that his sentence was excessive, while opponents point to the scale of Silk Road crime.

This is a critical story and will be updated accordingly.
