Stuart Varney: Last week, the California state legislature opened a special session to figure out how “The Trump Test” the state against the incoming president.

Hard to imagine a worse timing. Now it is obvious that the state needs Trump. In a week he will be sitting in the Oval Office. It will hold the purse strings. It is already labeled California politicians as “incompetent”. He told them Governor Newsome should resign. And Senator Barrasso says there will be strings attached to the money the federal government distributes. Good.

This is an opportunity to reject what you might call “the California model” of government. It is not working, and Trump has the leverage to force change.

It has already started: Newsom suspended the environmental review process for the reconstruction of damaged homes and businesses. It is a blow to their green dreams.

What is California as a sanctuary state? Will they continue to encourage illegal border crossers? Will they continue to protect illegal criminals from deportation? Trump will not be pleased to see the state legislature spend $25 million against Trump’s policies.

But Newsom shows no sign of respecting the president-elect. He says Trump “politicized” the disaster. But the event was driven, in part, by bad politics. An unfriendly business environment. Ev sent. There is a long way to go, and Trump will get there!

In short: politics has to change in California. It has to.
Trump is not going to provide the money if there is no change.
Look on the bright side: California’s debacle may help other states throw out ruinous policies. It will be a tough negotiation. But California’s failure gives Trump the edge….
