If you are traveling to the UK as early as this week, you may need to apply online for a travel authorization before you go.

Starting Wednesday, the United Kingdom will require citizens of the United States, Canadian citizens and nationals of more than three dozen other countries to have a so-called electronic travel authorization, or ETA.

Here’s what travelers need to know:

What is an electronic travel authorization?

ETA is a pre-authorization for travelers from countries where the UK does not require a visa.

The UK launched the program in 2024 for citizens visiting from Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. On Wednesday, it goes into effect for a host of additional countries.

Travelers still need to clear immigration upon arrival. The United States requires ETAs for nationals of European Union countries, the United Kingdom and other countries whose citizens are not required to have a visa to enter. Later in 2025, EU countries will ask for US citizens and nationals of other countries with similar criteria.

You do not need an ETA if you have a visa and are authorized to live, work or study in the UK

How can I get one?

You can apply online with the UK ETA app for Android and iPhone. It costs £10 (about $12.50) to apply, and is good for two years and for visits up to six months. The fee is paid by credit card.

Travelers have to upload their passport photos and themselves to apply.

How long does it take?

Applicants may wait approximately three days for a decision, sent by email.

And the children?

Everyone eligible for ETA will need one, including babies and children.

What if I connect in the UK?

You need an ETA even if you are traveling to a UK airport for a connecting flight to another country.
