Wait, Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard co-directed a summer Slasher Camp comedy?

Given the long distance between Stranger Thingsfourth and the long-awaited fifth seasonit is not surprising that the members of his cast have been busy with other projects. David Harbor did Marvel’s Thunderbolts*; Millie Bobby Brown has the Russo Brothers Electric State then on to his ever-growing Netflix docket. But from what we can tell, only a Hawkins, Indiana hero co-directed, co-written, and Co-starring in a movie during hiatus: Finn Wolfhard, whose slasher comedy dropped a trailer today.
Summer hell it actually had its premiere at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival, which means between Stranger Things The arrival of the fourth season in 2022, Wolfhard is also busy with no longer projects (including starring in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire). But we are still impressed by the level of survival here. Check out the red band trailer for their journey into the wacky terrors of summer camp.
The official synopsis reads: “Summer hell follows 24-year-old camp counselor Jason Hochberg (Fred Hechinger), who arrives at Camp Pineway thinking his biggest problem is that he feels out of touch with his teenage co-workers. What he doesn’t know is that a masked killer is lurking on the campsites, brutally picking off the counselors one by one.
It’s no coincidence that the main character’s name is Jason, of course. The film clearly rips off many tongue and cheek pages from Friday the 13th– and Friday the 13th Part 2both films about counselors being cast before the field really opens for business, but also have fun with other genre tropes. Ouija, anyone?
Wolfhard (who co-wrote and co-directed with Billy Bryk) co-stars in a cast that also includes Bryk, Abby Quinn, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Pardis Saremi, Rosebud Bakeri and Adam Pally. Summer hell hits theaters on April 18th, just in time for you to start rethinking all your camping plans.
