‘We won’t do that’: ITC chief Sanjiv Puri as 90-hour week debate rages

Sanjiv Puri, chairman of consumer cigarettes conglomerate ITC, also weighed in on the ongoing 90-hour work week debate. Puri said in a recent interview that rather than the number of hours, it is important for employees to be aligned to the larger vision of the company.
His remarks come amid raging debate surrounding L&T chairman SN Subrahmanyan’s remarks that employees should work 90-hour weeks.
“If you ask a bricklayer what he does, he might say he lays a brick, another might say he builds a wall, but some might say he builds a castle. That’s the vision workers should have,” he said. PTI in an interview.
When asked if that means he would prefer not to put in a number of hours, Puri said, “We wouldn’t do that.”
In addition, Puri explained that the empowerment of employees with the vision and purpose of the company is important.
“We use part of the vision and we want to contribute to making the vision a reality. And we allow vitality from our processes, from the resources that we provide, from the freedom of action that we provide, the empowerment that we provide, which are goals very different and very clear for individuals to reach, and these are the primary things we look at”.
To make matters worse, Subrahmanyan said he regrets not being able to make employees work on Sundays. An undated video where the president can be heard making these remarks has gone viral on social media.
He also questioned the need for employees to spend time at home. “What are you doing sitting at home? How long can you look after your wife, and how long does the wife look after the husband.”
Commenting on the viral video, Puri said, “I know he (Subrahmanyan) has been discussed a lot, but let me tell you the philosophy with which you look at it.”
