Weak 2024 sales could cause Samsung to lower foldable targets

Few can deny it foldable smartphones they’re smooth as hell and they’ve come an incredibly long way already. While just a few years ago they felt like fantastical concept devices that were too commercially impossible, manufacturers like Samsung have proven that there’s absolutely a market for phones that push those boundaries. But now a new report suggests that that market may be drying up a bit, as Samsung cuts back on plans for next year’s foldable models.

Perhaps buyers are a little bored with the slight changes made to old designs, or they are eager for a new wave of designs. double folding screensbut we had already heard Galaxy Z Fold 6 sale underestimated estimates. And while being more subtle Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition sales sounded more promising, even if that might not be enough to convince Samsung of the level of market interest in another iteration of the Fold and Flip models. Now a new report from South Korea ET News claims that the manufacturer plans to shift the balance of production to more Galaxy S phones and less foldable Galaxy Z phones.

Citing those targets to industry sources, the publication says that Samsung has scaled back its shipping targets for the Flip 7 and Fold 7 to just 5 million from the 8.2 million it had set for this year’s models. Meanwhile, its Galaxy S25 target is said to be up to 37.5 million units, slightly ahead of the S24’s 35 million.

While Samsung’s overall targets may be a bit lower in 2025 than this year, there’s still room to be surprised by some big hits, such as the rumored new models. Galaxy S25 Slim. Given the excitement we’ve seen about the slimmer Z Fold Special Edition, a more affordable flagship with similar appeal could indeed take off, and Samsung is apparently expecting to ship around 3 million units of this phone.

Right now, we’re looking forward to the start of Samsung’s 2025 story Unpacked Galaxy. While the company hasn’t shared any official announcement yet, rumors suggest we’ll get a look at the new S25 handset on January 22.
