Energy Harvesting With Piezoelectric Sensors
With current piezoelectric materialsit is now possible to harvest electricity and store it for later use. The problem is not generating electricity – it’s just generating enough of it. Due to the relatively low energy outputs of PZT materials, the ability to generate and store enough energy using this technology to power an engine, a car or any other large, energy-consuming that device is still far away.
Much thought has been put into the idea of walkways, stairs and walkways that incorporate piezoelectric materials that use the electricity produced for storage, but the technology is difficult to scale to generate enough energy.
Research continues, however, and advances in piezoelectric materialsas well as increasing energy output, showing small but positive gains. Although they are not able to generate large amounts of power, the ability to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy will continue to expand the appeal of piezoelectric materials and piezo sensor applications. Thanks to the reliability and precision of products using our piezoelectric materials, they will continue to be an important part of the production and conservation of electricity throughout wide range of industries.
