Smart wearables are as useful as they are useful thanks to all the sensor data they can collect. As we wear them, they count our steps, read our pulse, measure the amount of oxygen in the blood and much more. companies that do best worn are always interested in pushing the limits to add new sensor capabilities to their products, such as many of them have been experimenting with blood pressure. Today, we’re learning about what Samsung is doing to achieve just such a milestone: non-invasive optical blood glucose monitoring.
People with diabetes have been checking their glucose levels for decades, and technology has improved all the time, bringing us from the days of blood and test strips with finger sticks to continuous continuous glucose monitors that connect to our phones via Bluetooth. And as these testing options become more accessible (with less exposure to needles and blood), there is growing interest among non-diabetics who use data on glucose levels to make nutrition and health decisions.

The Holy Grail would be a system as accurate, compact and non-invasive as the optical sensors we now use to monitor pulse and blood oxygen. Although no one has yet cracked this nut commercially, Samsung has been working hard on this for yearsand may be the company that will eventually do it.
At the Samsung Health forum organized by the company in San Jose today, Senior Vice President Hon Pak spoke briefly about what his team is doing to achieve this goal:
What really excites me is our team, as you can imagine, we are working on a non-invasive optical-based continuous glucose monitor. I can’t tell you the timing (of launch), but I’m very excited about the progress we’ve made and it’s going to be a game changer if we get it right.
Indeed, if Samsung manages to be among the first to market with such technology, it could be huge for Galaxy Watch sales. Perhaps the biggest competition out there comes from Apple, which is investing heavily in wearable health sensor development. Given the nature of the comments we’ve heard today, we may be reluctant to bet on Samsung’s solution being ready in time. Galaxy Watch 8however, we will be keen to see if any further signs of progress emerge.
