Mobile & Gadgets:

You have until 2025 to get 5GB of monthly backup data for just $50 a year!

TL;DR

  • Mobi offers 5GB of high-speed data and unlimited 1.5Mbps data every month for just $50, or just $4.16 per month.
  • The only caveat is that this is beta, so there might be a few hiccups in the experience. You will also not be able to receive a text message or an actual number.
  • The beta runs on T-Mobile’s network, so despite some setup hiccups and other growing pains, the experience shouldn’t be too different from other prepaid carriers on the Uncarrier’s network.

There’s a pretty solid chance you’ve never heard of Mobi unless you live in Hawaii, but now’s the time to sit up and take notice, because this current deal is pretty hard to beat. If you pay just $50 to Mobi right now you will get 5 GB high speed data per month T-Mobile network unlimited 1.5Mbps speed for the whole year and beyond.

Calling it “dirty cheap” would be an understatement. Now to be clear, Mobi is an MVNO, so you won’t be getting service directly from T-Mobile, but the provider is partnering with T-Mobile for the service. This means you should get the same experience as prepaid providers Mint Mobile and US Mobile.

Any other catches here? A few, but none of them are bargains when you consider the price tag. First, you have more than a day until 2025 to sign up for this promotional price. The bigger catch is that this is a beta program. So the experience may not be flawless. For example, Mobi notes that setup is smooth for iPhones, but may be more difficult for some Android devices. The operator promises to help configure the APN settings if necessary, but wants to clarify that there may be some problems.

Beta’s feature set is also basic – you won’t send a phone number or text. These features, along with add-ons like tablet sharing and standalone watch/tablet plans, will eventually be available for an additional fee.

This plan is ideal for those looking for a backup line and comfortable with occasional outages. If you enjoy working and troubleshooting, this is a great way to add T-Mobile coverage as a secondary option for areas not reached by your primary carrier like AT&T or Verizon.

Who is Mobi and should you trust them?

Mobi is not a 24/7 operation and you can trust them completely. Founded in Hawaii in 2006, the company has recently expanded beyond the islands by partnering with other chains. Mobi’s coverage now includes the mainland US, Puerto Rico and Canada. As part of the beta, you’ll get international access to the UK, Ireland, Portugal, Belgium and India at no extra cost.

Yes, this deal is incredibly cheap – but that’s because it’s a beta test. You get unlimited data for nothing (reduced after 5GB of high-speed usage), but in return, you help Mobi identify and resolve service issues to improve its product. This is a win.

I’ve signed up myself and will report back on my experiences once I’ve had more time to test the beta.
